Balwant Singh Rajoana's Letter to Captain Amarinder on Rejecting Blue Star Memorial
Amarinder rejects Blue Star Memorial, Terms Rajoana a 'murderer'
Bhai Balwant Singh Rajoana's letter dated 09-06-2012 to Amarinder Singh on his statement against the victims and shaheeds of 1984 Sikh Genocide.
Letter Date: 9th June 2012
Original Statement by Captain Amarinder was published on 5th June 2012.Chandigarh, June 5
Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee President Capt Amarinder Singh who had maintained silence till now on the Memorial of Martyrs being set up in the shape of a Gurudwara within the complex of Sri Darbar Sahib at Amritsar, today said it was completely wrong to set up Operation Bluestar Memorial as it was not going to help the state in anyway.
The former Chief Minister and the PCC president who had advocated for commuting the death sentence of Bhai Balwant Singh Rajoana, today condemned the attempts to glorify Balwant Singh Rajoana convicted of murdering former Chief Minister S Beant Singh.
Amarinder's views on these two crucial issues assume significance as these have come just a few hours before the Sikh Panth is due to observe Ghallughara Divas as remembrance of Operation Blue Star, which happened on June 6, 1984.
Replying to a question on the issue during a press conference at Amritsar today, Capt Amarinder maintained that Punjab cannot afford such things, like the Bluestar Memorial, as last three decades had only seen the state’s economic decline.
He said, setting up such memorials do not send the right signals. “We must look forward”, he remarked.
The PCC President questioned the attempts of glorifying Rajoana, saying, “he (Rajoana) is a murderer who had murdered our Chief Minister”.
At the same time Capt Amarinder clarified that he had only opposed the death penalty to Rajoana since he was against the capital punishment to anyone. He said,he had suggested converting Rajoana’s punishment from death to life imprisonment which meant that for the whole life he should remain behind the bars.

10 Days Of Terror - Remembering 1984
Follow #10DaysofTerror on twitter - Golden Temple, Amritsar

1st June 1984 - It all started from this view!
2nd June 1984 - Indira Gandhi announced peace and started terror killings!
3rd June 1984: Martyrdom Day of Guru Arjan Dev ji - Worshippers trapped inside Golden Temple after curfew was reimposed!
4th June 1984: No warnings, 4AM fire shellings at Golden Temple!
5th June 1984: Head Ragi of Darbar Sahab shot dead!
6th June 1984
6th June 1984: Continuing on from the night of the 5th June, moving into the early hours of the 6th June, the battle increased in ferocity. According to General K.S. Brar, on June 6, around 4-30 a.m., thirty soldiers managed to get into the Akal Takhat, the 'Immortal Throne' which represents the highest seat of Sikh spiritual and political sovereignty. The fighting in the early hours of the morning of the 6th was ferocious, and eyewitnesses including soldiers and General K.S. Brar, testify that although desperately outnumbered the Sikh Fighters fought bravely and “to the last man.”
The army ordered their tanks to fire upon the Akaal Takhat and due to the repeated explosions, the Akaal Takhat was reduced to rubble and the Sikh fighters inside died defending it.
“Photographs of the shattered shrine indicate quite clearly that the Vijayantas 105 mm main armaments pumped high-explosive squash-head shells into the Akal Takht. Those shells were designed for use against hard targets like armour and fortifications. When the shells hit their targets, their heads spread or squash on to the hard surface. Their fuses are arranged to allow a short delay between the impact and the shells igniting, so that a shock-wave passes through the target. Lieutenant-General Jagjit Singh Aurora, who studied the front of the Akal Takht before it was repaired, reckoned that as many as eighty of these lethal shells, could have been fired into the shrine.
“Grenades and poisonous gas shells were thrown at the men, women and children, who had locked themselves in the rooms, bathrooms and toilets of Guru Nanak Niwas, Guru Ram Das serai and Taja Singh Samundri Hall. Those who tried to come out were pierced with bayonets and shot dead. Some soldiers caught hold of small babies and children by their feet, lifted them up in the air and then smashed them against the walls and thus breaking their skulls.”

”It was a virtual massacre. A large number of women, children and pilgrims were gunned down.” As reported by The Guardian on 13th June 1984.

8th June: Refusal to Provide Aid to Wounded Pilgrims:
Many accounts of Operation Bluestar, including the SGPC's White Paper on the Punjab Problem, relate that the Red Cross was refused permission to enter the Temple complex and the wounded were left to suffer for days. Many people died of dehydration as they were refused water.
Bhan Singh told the members of the Citizens For Democracy team: "They [the Army] treated the inmates of the complex as enemies and whenever there was any person wounded on account of the firing, no Red Cross people were allowed to enter, rather the Red Cross personnel had been detained beyond Jallianwalla Bagh" more than a kilometre away from the main entrance to the Golden Temple from the Chowk Ghanta Ghar side.
The CFD report, 'Oppression in Punjab' remarks: In accordance with the UN Charter of Human Rights, the Red Cross is permitted to go in aid of the wounded right inside the enemy territory, but in Amritsar in June, 1984, the Red Cross was not allowed to enter the Golden Temple - a respected and hallowed part of our country - in aid of Indians under attack from the Indian Army. It only means that the attack was so brutal and the battle scene so grisly, that there was much to hide from public scrutiny, even if it be that of a neutral agency called the Red Cross. This also explains perhaps why Press censorship had already been imposed, the last of the journalists were hounded away and the Press was not allowed to go inside the Golden Temple up to June 10, when they were taken on a guided tour of the complex for the first time since the Army operation began almost a week before.
The Christian Science Monitor reported on the 8th June 1984:
"On Saturday, medical workers in Amritsar said soldiers had threatened to shoot them if they gave food or water to Sikh pilgrims wounded in the attack and lying in the hospital"
The Indian Government maintains that the attack on the Golden Temple (Sri Darbar Sahib) was launched in order to remove terrorists from the complex. In addition to the various facts covered in the previous write ups, including the lack of arrest warrant etc, which contradict this, is the fact that up to 75,000 Indian Army troops were deployed in Punjab. This figure is mind boggling, why would the Indian Army require tens of thousands of troops to arrest or kill 2-300 Sikhs?
The following quote is from an Indian Army circular which was distributed in June 1984. It reveals the true targets of the military operation:
"Some of our innocent countrymen were administered an oath in the name of religion to support extremists and actively participated in the act of terrorism. These people wear a miniature kirpan round their neck and are called "Amritdharis". They have to be subdued to achieve the final aim of restoring peace in the country. Any knowledge of the "Amritdharis" who are dangerous people and pledged to commit murder, arson and acts of terrorism should be immediately brought to the notice of the authorities. These people may appear harmless from outside but they are basically committed to terrorism."
This excerpt from the official document exposes that in fact all practicing Sikhs were considered terrorists and were targeted by the government.
The Golden Temple was not the only Gurdwara that was targeted:
"The army and police have also taken over 38 temples and other Sikh religious buildings throughout Punjab".
The Guardian - Thursday 7th June 1984
"According to reports from Patiala Hospital, over 50 people were killed at Gurdwara Dukh Niwaran.
Amritsar: Mrs. Gandhi's Last Battle , Tully, Mark and Jacob, (New Delhi,1985).
An article that was published in India Today (30/9/84) details the most vulnerable of the 18,000 "suspected terrorists" arrested in June 1984 and detained in maximum security prisons:
"These were the other victims of Operation Bluestar, little children, some only two years old, who got rounded up. Since then, 39 children have been languishing in two Ludhiana jails. The youngest of these children, Jasbir Kaur, is only two years old, her sister Charanjit Kaur is four, and her brothers, Harinder and Balwinder, are six and twelve.
There is four-year old Rinku whose father died during the army operation and whose mother has been missing since. Like the rest of the 'infant terrorists', Rinku had to go through gruelling interrogation. When asked where his mother was he replied, "I don't know". Asked where his father was, he said, "Killed with a gun". Why his stomach was so big; "Because I eat clay".
Their ordeal began in early June when they were picked up around the Temple and packed into camps in Amritsar and Jalandhar. Two central agencies, the Central Bureau of lnvestigation (CBI) and the Intelligence Bureau (IB) began their questioning. There were long, intimidating sessions. The children cried and begged to be sent home. But it went on for days. Their little finger prints were taken and IB sleuths set about verifying their bonafides. One interrogating officer admitted that officials were not moved by the children's cries.
Sadly enough, in their interrogations, the CBI and IB have shown little regard to any civil liberties or laws protecting young children. "These are all fine ideas for newspapers and preachers. We had on our hands suspected terrorists and would be terrorists" confessed a CBI officer.Their fate depends upon the Supreme Court, which takes up the case this fortnight. Meanwhile 39 little beings continue to pray for freedom every day.
According to two of the "terrorists" they mistreated while in prison;
Mehrban Singh, aged twelve, said, 'We were repeatedly asked if we were Bhindranwale's men. They hit us at Ludhiana jail, and thrust fingers into our necks, wanting us to confess."
Shamsher Singh, aged eleven, confirmed the bizarre interrogation about Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale, and that they were "regularly beaten in jail"
9th June 1984
9th June 1984: After the Sikh resistance had been overcome, only a few snipers remained. Following the execution of pilgrims, immediately after the main battle, those that survived were rounded up, detained by the Army and charged as terrorists:
"379 of the alleged 'most dangerous terrorists' were forced to sign a common confessional statement and thereafter served a common charge sheet that they were all Bhindranwale's closest associates and comrades-in-arms engaged in 'waging war against the State'. They were, therefore, detained under the NSA and are now being tried at Jodhpur under the Terrorist-Affected Areas (Special Courts) Act of 1984. As we were curious regarding the extent of danger these hardcore 'terrorists' posed to the State 'with the intention to establish a State independent from the Government of India to be known as Khalistan", we visited the homes of some of the Jodhpur detainees and met their families or relatives.
The evidence collected established beyond doubt that none of the Jodhpur detainees we succeeded in profiling are 'terrorists' but rather all of them are completely innocent, ordinary persons, whose only crime was that they had all gone to or were coming from the Golden Temple as devotees or pilgrims visiting the Golden Temple for the Guru Purab on June 3, 1984 or farmers gone to the Temple to deliver village donations of grain to the S.G.P.C. or students gone to pay obeisance at their holiest religious shrine, the Harmandir Sahib." Source; Citizens for Democracy; Report to the Nation: Oppression in Punjab (Bombay, 1985).
These detainees were detained for up to 5 years, before in the face of worldwide condemnation and protest they were finally released.

CBI Says Sajjan Kumar And Others Guilty - 1984 Delhi Sikhs Genocide
According to the latest report in 1984 Sikhs genocide, CBI has now stated that Sajjan Kumar and some others who are facing the case, were behind the mass killings of Sikhs in New Delhi. They were backed by the ruling party and no case of murder was filed in those days by Police. Witnesses have clearly stated that Sajjan Kumar was addressing his team that "Koi bhi sikh zinda nahi bachna chahiye aur jo unko bachane ki koshish kare, esko bhi jaan se maar do" means do not leave any sikh, they all should be murdered and whosoever helps them, should also be killed. For further details, read the newspaper column dated 23 April 2012.
